Journey Under the Midnight Sun
Author: Higashino Keigo (Japan)
"There are two things in the world that cannot be stared at directly: one is the sun, and the other is the human heart."
"This novel left a lasting impression on me. As a mystery, it’s tightly woven, with clear logic that links seemingly unrelated cases, all building toward a final revelation. But what truly sets this novel apart is its characters. Unlike many mysteries that pit heroes against villains, this story offers no easy moral lines. Each character is complex, shaped by their desires, traumas, and the choices they’ve made to survive. Yukiho strives to transcend social class, Ryoji acts to protect Yukiho, Tomohiko is driven by money and desire, and Imaeda pursues the truth.
Yukiho Karasawa is especially compelling. She’s smart, ambitious, and resilient—someone who manages to transform herself from a poor, traumatized girl into a woman of elegance and power. But her methods are far from noble. Some readers see her as a victim of her circumstances, using any means necessary to escape her dark past. Others view her as calculating and manipulative, willing to hurt anyone to achieve her goals. To me, Yukiho is both—and neither. She’s a product of her environment, and while her actions are often cruel and self-serving, they make perfect sense within the context of her life. Her calm, strategic nature is as chilling as it is impressive. Those who judge her harshly often forget how much darkness she had to overcome just to survive.
Another fascinating aspects of the novel is whether Yukiho loves Ryoji. There’s no question that Ryoji loves Yukiho—his entire life revolves around protecting her. But Yukiho’s feelings are harder to define. She doesn’t seem to love him in the romantic sense, but their connection is undeniable. It’s more like a mutual dependence, a deep, unspoken bond. As the novel describes, they are like a pistol shrimp and a goby fish—two creatures that rely on each other in a dangerous world. The ending is especially haunting, when Ryoji dies and Yukiho walks away without looking back. Her refusal to glance back isn’t just a way of leaving her past behind—it’s one of the few times she reveals a crack in her otherwise flawless composure. For a brief moment, it feels like her humanity has slipped away entirely, leaving her hollow and disconnected from the world."

The Three-Body Problem
Author: Liu Cixin (China)
“Emptiness is not nothingness. Emptiness is a type of existence. You must use this existential emptiness to fill yourself.”
Unlike conventional science fiction stories that dazzle readers with vast space battles and alien landscapes, The Three-Body Problem grounds its narrative in more familiar, Earth-bound settings. The novel follows two interwoven timelines. The first timeline is set during China’s Cultural Revolution, focusing on Ye Wenjie, an astrophysicist whose life is marred by tragedy. After witnessing the destruction of her family and career, Ye grows increasingly disillusioned with humanity. At Red Coast Base, a secret military research facility, she transmits Earth’s coordinates into space, unknowingly exposing humanity to an advanced alien civilization called the Trisolarans. The second timeline takes place in the present day, centering on Wang Miao, a nanotechnology scientist who becomes caught up in a series of inexplicable events. After a mysterious countdown appears in his vision, Wang begins investigating strange phenomena within the scientific community. His journey leads him to the Three-Body virtual reality game, which simulates the chaotic and unstable world of Trisolaris. Through the game, Wang uncovers critical information about the Trisolarans and the two Earth-based factions: the Earth Defense Organization, which works to protect humanity, and the Earth-Trisolaris Organization, which sides with the Trisolarans. By the novel’s end, the Trisolarans have set out for Earth, laying the groundwork for the dramatic events of the following books.
The experience of reading The Three-Body Problem was unforgettable. Two moments in particular—The Three-Body Game and Operation Guzheng—stood out to me as especially powerful. The Three-Body Game is a virtual reality simulation that allows players to experience life on the chaotic Trisolaran planet. Through this immersive game, characters—and readers—gain insight into the challenges faced by the Trisolarans. The game is not only a narrative device but also a brilliant tool for introducing key scientific concepts in an engaging way. It left me marveling at Liu’s ability to blend scientific theory with storytelling. Operation Guzheng is one of the most thrilling and memorable scenes in the novel. In this sequence, nanowire filaments are stretched across the Panama Canal, slicing a ship belonging to the Earth-Trisolaris Organization into fragments. Liu’s precise descriptions and careful attention to scientific detail make this moment incredibly impactful, showcasing his ability to combine technical accuracy with dramatic tension.
Reading The Three-Body Problem taught me more than just scientific concepts—it reshaped how I approach writing. As an aspiring sci-fi writer, I had often struggled to find balance in my work. My early stories were either too dense, filled with mathematical jargon that alienated readers, or too casual, sacrificing the clarity and rigor needed for science fiction. Liu’s novel showed me how to blend imagination, scientific detail, and engaging prose in harmony. By studying his approach, I learned how to distribute these elements thoughtfully, allowing me to craft more effective and satisfying stories.
To be influenced, guided, and inspired by a single work of science fiction is an extraordinary experience. For me, this novel didn’t just expand my imagination—it showed me the true purpose of sci-fi. It’s more than a genre. It’s a tool for exploring the unknown, sparking creativity, and imagining futures that go beyond our current understanding. Science fiction not only inspires us to dream but also equips us with the tools to shape those dreams into reality.
